How is this possible? How could they see planets invisible to the naked eye without advanced optical instruments? <\/p>\n\n

They had a mathematical system based on the number sixty, the sexagesimal system, which we still use today to measure time and angles. They divided the circle into 360 degrees, the hour into 60 minutes, the minute into 60 seconds. Why did they choose this particular system? Coincidence? Tradition inherited from someone else? Or a choice based on mathematical reasons we still don’t fully understand? <\/p>\n\n

Their medical knowledge was surprisingly advanced. They practiced surgery, knew hundreds of medicinal plants, and had concepts of hygiene and public health that wouldn’t be understood again until the modern era. They even had a rudimentary understanding of genetics, as demonstrated by some texts describing hereditary characteristics transmitted from parents to children. <\/p>\n\n

The Great Flood: Myth or Historical Memory?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Enki instructs Utnapishtim to build an enormous ark, providing him with precise dimensions and detailed instructions. The man must bring his family, skilled artisans capable of preserving arts and crafts, and pairs of animals of every species. When the flood arrives, it lasts seven days and seven nights, submerging even the mountains. Finally, the ark runs aground on a mountain and Utnapishtim releases first a raven, then a dove, to verify if the waters have receded. <\/p>\n\n

Sound familiar? It should, because this story is incredibly similar to the biblical account of Noah, but predates it by at least a thousand years. This has led many scholars to conclude that the biblical story was influenced by or directly derived from the older Mesopotamian myths, probably during the Babylonian exile of the Jewish people in the sixth century BC. <\/p>\n\n

But here’s the question we should ask ourselves: what if behind these myths there was a kernel of historical truth? We know that about 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, catastrophic sea level rises occurred that submerged vast coastal areas worldwide. When the continental glaciers melted, ocean levels rose by over 100 meters in a few thousand years, a blink of an eye in geological terms but an unimaginable cataclysm for coastal populations of that era. <\/p>\n\n

Is it possible that flood accounts are cultural memories of these traumatic events, passed down orally from generation to generation for thousands of years until they were finally written down by the Sumerians? Some researchers have even proposed that the Black Sea, which we now know was a freshwater lake until about 7,500 years ago, was suddenly flooded by saltwater from the Mediterranean in a catastrophic event that might have inspired flood legends in that region. <\/p>\n\n
